Description
The central venous catheter is a long, thin tube that is inserted into a vein in the arm. It is used to give patients intravenous (injected into the bloodstream) treatments, such as fluids and medications. The CVC has a number of different features that make it useful for these purposes, including a variety of different lumens that can be used for different purposes, such as infusion, pressure monitoring, and venous sampling. The CVC is also next to a set of components that are needed for percutaneous insertion, such as a needle, a check valve, and a syringe. The entire set is sterilized by exposure to ethylene oxide.
